In 1866 the Chassepot relegated the guns loaded by mouth to the rank of antiques.

To give the reserves a "modern" rifle, the Minister of War, Marshal Niel, had the old weapons converted into a tobacco system that was developed in 1867.

The name comes from the opening mode of the breech block, which is reminiscent of a tobacco lid.

Rifles 1822 Tbis, 1842, 1857, 1853T, Rifles of the guard 1854, rifles of hunters 1859, rifles of dragons will be transformed.

All will take the name of Mle 1867.

This one, however, has a peculiarity, it has a particularly long barrel !

Originally heavy, this rifle because of its long barrel still gains weight.
